My target 7000 Steps

Stepping up, stepping out, feeling beats, healing hearts

I'd love to be a runner. But I actually love walking. And I need to do more of it to improve my health. So, this August, I’ve signed up to the Heart Foundation challenge of walking 7000+ steps a day for 31 days.

The aim is to support Australians affected by heart disease through donations to the Heart Foundation, but I am also  motivated to do this as a way of prioritising the exercise I need to do for my personal benefit.

You can help to make every step count with a donation that will go towards life-saving research and support for those affected by heart disease.

Or why not take on the challenge too? You'll not only be helping to save lives – you'll also improve your health. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Australia, and together we can make a difference.

So let's step up and step out.

My Updates

Life takes over

Wednesday 13th Aug
In the absence of a regular rhythm and routine to my days, it's difficult to lock in daily "step time". However, as I complete the log to date, I realise that I now need to average 9900 steps a day for the rest of the month to hit the pledged total of 217,000. Ever animated by a challenge, and seldom short of hope, the prospect excites and motivates me. I will keep you posted. PS As I don't wear a pedometer around my wrist, the step counts here are lower than they might be and represent only steps I've taken while carrying my phone -- in transit, or on a walk. I could put on my smartwatch again, but I think I'll take some time instead to go for some solid walks. Just need to increase my planning agility and seize the opportunities as they arise.

Do people in England go walking?

Wednesday 6th Aug
In the middle of a wet spell several years ago, I bemoaned the lack of opportunity to stretch my legs due to inclement weather, to which I was asked: Do you suppose people in England never go for a walk? In other words, why don't I dress appropriately -- take a brolly, buy some Gore-Tex or other shoes and a jacket -- and get out there? Given the late start to this month's challenge, I've calculated that I now need to walk 8162 steps a day for the remainder to hit the baseline goal of 7000 a day (I had hoped to better that at 8000). With another corker forecast for Sydney, I'm planning to get out there and get on top of that average this morning once the kids are at school.
